Health & Wellness

ACA Accredited

Did you know that we’re accredited by the American Camp Association (ACA)? This means in addition to our CT state licensing guidelines, we voluntarily follow over 200 additional standards to create a safe environment for our boys. We have visits from ACA every few years that follows our program quality and the health and safety of campers and staff. The standards establish guidelines for needed policies, procedures, and practices, and Awosting has been accredited for over 60 years!

Health Center

Our registered nurse is on-site 24/7 to supervise our health center. Our dedicated health team review each campers’ medical history and medications prior to their arrival. Families are able to meet with our medical staff on opening day to review their camper’s needs. Our caring team will attend to any medical need as it arises. Their job is to manage health and wellness and assess medical situations requiring a higher level of care. They are in contact with our director team on a daily basis and have an open door policy! We also work hard to ensure a safe transfer of medications for campers that are prescribed them from their pediatrician, and have an on-call doctor ready for any urgent issues.

Besides our dedicated medical team, many of our staff are certified in First Aid and CPR from the American Red Cross. Out medical center is fully stocked with over-the-counter medications, and we have an AED on site.

Camp Meals

We love camp food! In addition to our main meals, we offer our fresh fruit, yogurt, and cereal bar at breakfast, our salad bars at lunch and dinner, daily pasta and bagel bars. Our boys are well fed at Awosting (and they eat a LOT!) We offer a large variety of hot and cold options for each meal, including locally sourced and organic options. We work closely with our head chef and the kitchen team to accommodate any and all food allergies and sensitivities. Besides being a nut-free camp, we also offer vegetarian and gluten-free options for every meal. Fresh fruit is available all day, as well as some occasional treats! We make sure our campers are well fed with healthy options, so they’re ready to take on the day at Awosting. Feel free to give us a call if you have any questions!

Safety

We are so proud of our camp, and the way that we have run for the past 118 years. Awosting offers a variety of fun and exciting activities, including some adventurous ones like camping, hiking, ropes course, motor sports, and water sports. However, with these opportunities offered in an outdoor, hilly setting, come certain risks. As an adventurous summer camp, recreation activities include inherent risks that are integral to the activities. These risks can provide the challenge to participate, the opportunity to learn, or the motivation for growth.

As a result, safety is a priority in our programming. As an American Camp Association (ACA) accredited and licensed summer camp, we aim to manage these risks. Our summer camp counselors are diverse and enthusiastic, and, depending upon their position, have training in CPR, first aid and/or wilderness first aid. Our staff training is thorough and rigorous, as we work through a variety of topics including cabin life, daily activities, meal times, hygiene, and energetic all-camp programs, just to name a few.
